Varicose Veins

What are Varicose Veins?

They are large, swollen veins that often appear on the legs and feet. They happen when the valves in the veins do not work properly, so the blood does not flow effectively. For many people, varicose veins and spider veins are simply a cosmetic concern. For others varicose veins can cause aching pain and discomfort that might lead to more serious problems.

Cause

  • Weak or damaged valves
  • Aging
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Standing or sitting for too long

Management

  • Increase physical exercise
  • Maintain a healthy and balanced diet (high fiber, low salt diet)
  • Avoid wearing high heels and tight hosiery
  • Perform leg elevations
  • Wear compression socks
  • Changing your sitting or standing position regularly

Treatment

  • Venous ablation or microphlebectomy are minimally invasive options that can be done at the hospital
  • If you don’t respond to self-care or compression stockings, or if your condition is more severe, consult a doctor for an invasive surgical treatment
