What is Tinea Pedis?
Commonly known as Athlete’s foot, is a fungal infection that usually begins between the toes. It commonly occurs in people whose feet have become very sweaty while confined within tightfitting shoes. It is characterized by squamous, hyperkeratotic macerations and fissures. Athlete’s foot often contagious and can be spread by contact with an infected person or from contact with contaminated surfaces, such as towels, floors and shoes.
Cause
- The same type of fungus that causes ringworm and jock itch
- Damp socks and shoes
- Warm and humid conditions that favor the organisms’ growth
Management
- Keep your feet dry, especially between your toes
- Change socks regularly (If your feet get very sweaty, change your socks twice a day)
- Wear light, well-ventilated shoes
- Wear waterproof sandals or shoes around public pools, showers and lockers rooms
- Don’t share shoes if you are at high risk of infection
Treatment
- Apply terbinafine hydrochloride cream 1% to the affected area in the morning and evening for 6 weeks.
- Make sure to wash hands directly afterwards.
