Palmar Warts

What are Palmar Warts?

They are benign, epidermal proliferations that grow on the palms of the hands. Warts are particularly common in childhood and are spread by direct contact or autoinoculation (scratching). They can be persistent but 65%-90% clear up spontaneously over years without treatment.

Cause

Cause can be due to an infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

Management

  • Consider cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen can be used to freeze and destroy affected skin cells
  • Consider electrosurgery as an optional treatment that burns the warts with electrical current
  • Consider surgical removal

Treatment

Apply 40% salicylic acid based agents that denature wart cells.
