Dandruff

What is Dandruff?

It is a common scalp disorder affecting almost half of the population at puberty and of any gender and ethnicity. It is represented by white scales of non-inflamed skin found in the hair and confined to the scalp. Dandruff often causes itching and may fluctuate seasonally as it often worsens during winter.

Cause

  • Cold and dry air
  • Showering excessively with hot water
  • The use of styling hair products (waxes, gels) that dry out the scalp

Management

  • Avoid hair products that contain bleach and alcohol
  • Expose the scalp to a bit sunlight
  • Avoid stressful environment

Treatment

  • Massage scalp with ketoconazole 2% shampoo for 5 minutes before rinsing completely
  • This shampoo is to be used 2 times per week for 4 weeks
  • In addition, use antidandruff shampoo for the rest of the days
