Cysts

What are Cysts?

They are closed capsules or sac-like structures, typically filled with liquid, semisolid, or gaseous material, very much like a blister. Cysts occur within the tissue and can affect any part of the body. They can vary in size from microscopic to large filled sacs.

Important facts:

  • Cysts are usually noncancerous and benign
  • Cysts are common and can occur anywhere on the body
  • Cysts are often genetic or caused by an infection, clogging of sebaceous glands, or injury
  • It is unusual for cysts to cause pain unless they rupture, become infected, or inflamed

Management

  • Avoid physical injury
  • Leave them untouched
  • Consult a doctor if there is an often change in color/size or moves freely

Treatment

  • Visit a doctor to have them surgically removed in case they are infected and painful.
