What are Chilblains?
Also known as pernio or perniosis, they are itchy, tender and reddish bumps that occur as a reaction to cold. Chilblains most often affect children and the elderly in damp, temperate climates causing their fingers to swell.
Cause
- Cold climates
- Poor peripheral circulation
- Malnutrition
- Hormonal changes
Management
- Minimize smoking habit
- Wear warm gloves
- Exercise regularly to keep blood flowing
Treatment
- Apply mometasone cream in the morning and evening for 10 days to relieve itch and swelling
- Apply fucidic acid ointment in the morning and evening for 7 days in case of infection
