Calluses (Hands)

What are calluses?

They are thick, hardened layers of skin that develop when the skin tries to protect itself against broken skin and irritants exposure. Calluses don’t usually hurt and are most often found on your palms.

Cause

  • Working with your hands
  • Playing instruments
  • Dehydrated skin

Management

  • Wear gloves when necessary
  • Use protective covering such as non-medicated callus pads or bandages over the area

Treatment

Follow the below steps to ease the removal of calluses:

  • Soak hands in warm water for 10 minutes
  • Rub the area with an emery board to remove thickened skin
  • Dry the area well then moisturize the hands until soft to the touch
