Calluses (Feet)

What are Calluses?

They are thick, hardened layers of skin that develop when the skin tries to protect itself against friction and pressure. They tend to develop on the soles of the feet, especially under the heels. Calluses vary in size and shape and are larger than corns.

Cause

  • Wearing tight fitting shoes
  • Wearing shoes without socks
  • Dehydrated skin

Management

  • Wear breathable shoes that give your toes plenty of space
  • Use protective covering such as non-medicated callus pads or bandages over areas that rub against footwear
  • Moisturize the skin to keep feet feeling soft

Treatment

Follow the below steps to ease the removal of calluses:

  • Soak feet in warm water for 10 minutes
  • Rub the area with an emery board to remove thickened skin
  • Dry the area well then apply salicylic acid patches or 40% salicylic acid solution
