What is Atopic Dermatitis?

Commonly known as eczema, atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by severe itching lesions that are typically symmetric and range from dry scales to crusty, red vesicles that may be associated with oozing. It involves areas of the neck, elbow creases, behind the knees and sometimes chest. Majority of cases affect children up to 5 years of age.

Cause

  • Polygenic inheritance
  • History of allergic reactions
  • Impaired epidermal barrier and increase in trans-epidermal water loss
  • Sudden temperature or humidity changes
  • Emotional stress
  • Dust and pollen
  • Detergents and fragrances
  • Certain food

Management

  • Avoid triggering factors
  • Moisturize frequently (oatmeal based)
  • Avoid using a loofa
  • Use nonirritant products
  • Use humidifiers
